Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lost Aberdeen - A History Of Short-Sighted Destruction   December 2, 2004

The best single source I've come across, the next best being a slim Aberdeen City Council publication of 1981 which described the city's 'treasures' just before a new round of demolitions in the name of progress. Lost Aberdeen is a fascinating and delightfully partisan account of the destruction of Aberdeen's architectural heritage since the medieval period in the name of what was perceived to be improvement over the centuries. The narrative certainly demonstrates that short-sighted 're-development' is not just a post-WW2 phenomenon. Readers not familiar with Aberdeen's 19th Century street layout might consider obtaining a copy of the 1901 map of the city centre published separately.
