The Heart Of Scottish Fiction June 7, 2008 Im not gonna write a long review as other users have done the band justice with recommending this best of. Im not gonna critique the band. Just going to say if you like rock music in any shape or form Idlewild are one of the best groups to come out of Scotland alongside Biffy Clyro. When listening to the music you can almost *feel* a rooting that can only come from growing up in Scotland. Listen to "Scottish Fiction". My favourite track by Idlewild is the sweet longing track "El Capitain", a song i couldn't live without..... The price for this album is a steal, don't download it. Support the band, read the liner notes while your listening and place yourself in Idlewild's world. !!!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Scottish Facts March 1, 2008 There are probably plenty of people out there who are wondering how and why Idlewild are still going and some detractors who might be wishing that the 'best of' will effect an end. However the strength of later material (included here) suggests that they can only improve. In particular the compliation shows how Roddy's articulated and thought provoking lyrics have matured and developed over the past ten years. Either way this compliation serves to underline the excellence of their music and their lastability as songwriters.
The compliation of songs on the CD is hard to fault, with the 'best of' allowing some fine non-singles to be included. Although 'Actually is darkness' is a glaring ommission (Sorry guys but it is), and a token track from 'Captain' would not have gone amiss.
The DVD that accompanies the disc is well worth the extra pennies, with all the bands videos included, and accompanied with an incisive and frank commentry from Roddy. The Rocummentry is well presented with camcorder footage interwoven with rare tracks and interesting snippets which manage to be artistic without being overly pretentious. The live gig from Barrowlands however should have either been ditched or replaced with something more energetic. They have sounded much better live than the performance suggests with Roddy's vocals in this incidence sound positively lackadaisical, which with his dreadful haircut are are far cry from his rock star potential.
Nit-picking aside this is a excellent biopic and enjoyable Idlewild purchase, which is definitely worth investigation.
...In competition for the best band... October 25, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product is GENIUS. The first CD has 17 Tracks highlighting the bands progression from raw edged upstarts of Scottish shouty rock 'When I argue I see shapes' through first goes at an anthem 'American english' and arty video backed pop tune 'Love steals us from loneliness' to pure rock epics 'No emotion' and 'Ghost in the arcade'. A fine compilation if you're new to the band.
The inspired bit is to pack all the above with a DVD with 43 tracks: A full length gig filmed in Aberdeen (even if they look a bit like someone your dad might turn up to see), interspersed with odd bits of footage from the past 10+ years (along with hard to get promo tunes), or watch the gig on its own. Add 17 promo videos with optional footage from singer Roddy Woomble, and more extras including insights into their last 2 albums.
I honestly would have paid double what I did for this - at the price you can get this for it's an absolute bargain. A perfect companion to 'My secret is my silence', the solo album from Roddy, and the best reason to admit you're from north of the Border. You do us proud!
the most underrated band in Britian October 8, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
What can I say? This is the band that everyone should be talking about but for some unknown reason are still left in the fringes. I have been a fan of Idlewild since thier humble beginnings and the power and pure emotion of thier music I still find dazzling. Every song on this compilation is superb, but with so many brilliant songs in thier back catalogue it must have been difficult to limit thier 'best of' to just 17 tracks. Exceptional.
