doesn't do what it says June 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yup it's a pretty decent read. The book is given context by some essays from Mark Rector and Paul Wagner. I found myself not agreeing with some points of My Wagner's essay but he overall it's quite interesting and supported by many sources. McBane's autobiography is very entertaining and both McBane and Hope's work will be of interest to historical fencers especially those using the smallsword. However the book really isn't about highland swordsmanship but mostly concerned with use of the smallsword. Hope's work does touch on other sword forms and McBane does include some small scenarios with highland weapons but they are more "colour" than the actual main subject matter. This would not be a problem for most 17-18th century fencers but for anyone intersted primarily in highland weapons it would be a dissapointment. The photos do help give some clarity (18th century writers were certainly wordy) but the standard of the costume (in the highlander section) is pretty poor and I wonder if more editorial control could have been used. It was quite a suprise considering the historical detail of other sections and the standing of the contibuting writers.
A very interesting resource October 13, 2003 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
This books is a wonderful resource for writers or reinactors. It pays ode to the romanticising of Scottish fighters such as Rob Roy, Wallace, The Bruce and Bonnie Prince Charlie, but goes past these legendary images to show you the reasons for certain practices. It covers the basics of offence and defence, especially in the fencing techniques of the 17th through 19th centuries. I do wish I would have covered the medieval aspects of Highland swordsmanship: The Claymore. The movements for using the longest two handed sword is wonderful to see in action, so I had hoped this book would cover that. Lots of diagrams and photos so the non fencer can follow precisely what they are demonstrating.Very detailed in who did what in duels, the protocol and history. All in all a very good work.

A well laid out and entertaining book. Taken from a martial point of view this tome will need a little prior knowledge to assist the reader to the extent that the text is capable of. The historic figures are not particulary clear (as was usual), the modern photos and text are far better at reaching a modern audience. From the historic point of view this is a facinating read, if it only contained Donald McBane's biography and text it would be well worth buying, but there is far more in store between it's pages. Having been to the soldiers leap at Kilicrankie Pass I am in awe of this man anyway. My only niggle is that a few of the "historical" costumes do appear a little Hollywood rather than Hollyrood. Over all a great addition to my collection, I enjoyed this book alot.
