A great guidebook for the serious walker. March 5, 2008 I am not doing the Munros - I am doing the Storers! I have now completed 44 of these routes. Beware the star grades, Storer's routes are normally pretty tough and many people have been caught out by them. Some of the routes are so popular that they are becoming eroded and crowded in good weather. However, the mountains which Ralph chooses are without exception superb and they are not necessarily the most obvious choices.
It is possible to take issue with some of his route choices, eg climbing straight up to the CMD arrete on Ben Nevis, rather than taking the Ledge Route, but you will never be let down by a Storer route.
Needs more detail January 8, 2008 A bit sketchy in places which is the last thing you want as some of these are serious mountains. Also says on the back that 'all routes are circular', when this is not the case. Locations also a bit vague sometimes, would look elsewhere.
can be difficult to follow December 13, 2007 had mixed experiences with this book... Ben Cruachan was fine (sorry sp!), but the route up Slioch failed to mention a stream you need to ford - we tried to do this walk after a few days of rain, and wasted a good hour trying to cross the raging torrent it had become...
You should also note that the description says all routes can be done in a day, but there's a few which can't (admittedly, these are mountains remote from roads so there's no way you could do them in a day, but...)
Straight forward practical walk guide April 22, 2006 This book is an excellent way to both select your trip, and to identify a straightforward route.
A must have for walking in Scotland February 18, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a must for anyone venturing onto the Scottish hills. Great variety of walks and scrambles to suit all tastes with all the major walking areas catered for. Excellent descriptions of access to each route as as well as lots of details on the routes themselves. My only complaint would be the timing of some of the walks. Some were a little on the optomistic side and some a litte conservative, overall a little consistent. All in all though a great book and well worth the price.
