5 out of 5 stars Great book   May 20, 2006

I came over from Ireland having never been in Scotland before to get to the top of Ben Nevis, and this has a useful guide to doing it (about 10 pages). The rest of the book? After a successful trip, I'm definitely coming back again to do some of the other walks in the area, and I think that this is the only book I'll need with a small bit of support from the Internet. Worth the purchase. (If you're using it for Ben Nevis by the way, there's also a great waterproof map you can get from Amazon, Harvey's I think, very useful).

5 out of 5 stars from the beginner to the advanced   October 20, 2005

this essential tool should be in your baggage before you arrive in this amazing part of the UK. There are many walks that are described from low level to the heights of the West Highlands and bagging a Munro or 2. The route notes and maps are very easily followed, they also give information on public transport, refreshments, and facilities at the start, end and actually on the routes - there are many photos as well to give you an idea of the ground covered. Bound in a waterproof cover (mine was anyway) it has been up to the top of Ben Nevis 3 times, it has showed me a hidden underpass under the Caledonian canal, and every walk whether at valley floor or navigating across narrow ridges and aretes gives the reader the very best views of the Highlands. In August 2004, I sat down on Ben Nevis and watched the sun set over the distant isles with Golden Eagles circling overhead, and nobody but my partner in sight (even then we sat apart) - glorious!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Source of Walks in the Area   July 11, 2005

My parents have a cottage near Glen Coe and I have been up on many walking expeditions. This book is the best source of good walks in and around Glen Coe and Glen Nevis. There are 30 walks in all, ranging from the easy to very strenuous. Most are aimed at the serious walker. All my favourites are in this book - Ring of Steall, Grey Corries, Sgorr Dhearg, Buchaille Etive Mor, Pap of Glencoe, Aonach Eagach ridge and many more. The only walk I would add is the ledge walk up Ben Nevis. The book doesn't cover the West Highland Way either, though this is no loss to me as I prefer the heights. Highly recommended to walkers visiting the area.

5 out of 5 stars Collins Ramblers Guides excellent!   October 29, 2004

Over the past year I have used the Collins Ramblers guides for the Lake District, North Wales, Peak District, Ben Nevis and Glen Coe and others to choose day trip to the mountains and hills of Britain. They are fabulous books, well presented with full details and maps and as an added and very special bonus they contain the history and myths of the areas which always add an extra touch to each walk!

Definitely recommended!

If this book doesn't make you want to up sticks (work permitting), move to Fort William and enjoy the beautiful Highlands at every opportunity, then you really should check to see if you still have a pulse. If I ever find myself wondering (very rarely) of the wisdom in driving the 500+ miles necessary to enjoy this region, a brief browse through this guide leaves me in no doubt that not to go would definitely be insane.
The guide to each walk is very well written with excellent photographs and clear maps. The book also includes interesting snippets of history and legends which add to the appreciation of the area.
If you are planning to visit this area, then buy this book. If you are not, then buy the book and I guarantee you will go.
